The Helena Police Department is a progressive and community oriented, professional law enforcement agency. It is made up of 28 sworn police officers and 8 non-sworn dispatch personnel. We offer the full range of law enforcement services to a population of over 18,000 citizens in the City of Helena 24 hours a day. The men and women of the Helena Police Department are here to serve you, the citizens of Helena. If you filed a police report or an accident report in the City of Helena, you can get a copy of your report at the Helena Police Department. Please bring a valid Driver License or State Id card. Police / Accident report copies cost $5.00 exact cash ONLY.
The Helena Police Department Headquarters is open 24 Hrs. 7 days a week for police services to include: filing a police report, obtaining a copy of your police report, fingerprints, vehicle impound release, inmate release.
To have your vehicle released from police impound, please bring your proof of ownership along with a valid driver license with you to the Helena Police Department. We accept proof of ownership in the form of vehcile registration receipt, vehicle title, or bill of sale. Vehicle impounds are charged an initial fee of $50.00 plus $5.00 for each additional day that the vehicle is stored by impound. Helena Police department accepts exact cash ONLY.

How to Apply
You can apply to become a Police Officer or Dispatcher by completing the application for employment and returning it to the Helena Police Department, 816 Hwy 52E Helena Al 35080 (205-663-6499). You may also E-mail the application for employment as an attachment to Lt. Charles Hudson at chudson@cityofhelena.org
Qualifications
- 19 years of age or older , 21 years of age or older (Police Officer).
- Have either a high school diploma or GED (Associates or Bachelors Degree preferred).
- Possess a valid state of Alabama driver’s license.
- Have no felony convictions.
- Honorably discharged from the US military.
- Good moral character and reputation
- APOSTC Certified or have similar certification from out of state (Police Officer).

Salary
- Police Officer starting salary: $56,800.38 annual + $200.00 a month uniform stipend
- Dispatcher starting salary: $22.97 Hr + $150.00 a month uniform stipend
The Action center is your online communication portal to the Helena Police Department. Please let us know if you are going out of town and would like extra patrol. The Helena Police Department will again this year be collecting toys for local children in need. We encourage everyone to bring an UNWRAPPED toy by HPD anytime between now and Dec 21st.
For those needing assistance in providing a nice Christmas for their children, we ask that you please complete the application attached to this post and return it to HPD in person, email or mail. This allows us to know how many children we need to provide for as well as how many boy and girl specific toys we will need.

And yes, we do accept CASH donations for Toys for Tots. This allows us to purchase specific toys for special needs children or provide gift cards or other gifts for older kids whose siblings receive assistance and still deserve a great Christmas.

Exploring is open to youth ages 14-21 that are interested in Law Enforcement. As an explorer, you will get Hands On training from law enforcement professionals and the chance to Ride Along with ON DUTY Helena Police Officers. You will also have the chance to be involved in Community Service Projects and fun post activities.
